Press Release: CAC Deadline Extended to 1/21/2016

DEADLINE EXTENDED TO JANUARY 21, 2016 FOR TEENS TO SUBMIT APPS TO CONGRESSIONAL APP CHALLENGE

WASHINGTON, DC – Due to popular demand, high school students who would like to participate in the 2015 Congressional App Challenge now have until Thursday, January 21, 2016 at 3:00 PM EST to do so.

The Congressional App Challenge (CAC) is a Congressional initiative to improve student engagement in coding and computer science. So far, more than 960 students from 175 Congressional districts across 42 states, have signed up to compete in their districts.

High school students in participating Congressional districts are invited to submit original apps that they created any time within the last year. Students are allowed to participate as individuals, or in teams of up to four. Submitted apps will be evaluated by panels of local judges through February 12, and Members of Congress will announce their district winners on February 22, 2016. Winners will be honored by their Member of Congress and have their apps featured on display in the Capitol building in Washington, DC.

Representatives Mimi Walters and Hakeem Jeffries are serving as co-chairs for the 2015 CAC. To engage the greatest number of teens, with special efforts to involve students from groups typically underrepresented in tech, the Challenge is collaborating with a growing list of partner organizations including: the Computer Science Teachers Association, the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, appmyrep, #YESWECODE, New Tech Network, YouthHack, CODE NOW, and more.

Capital One is generously serving as the principal sponsor of the 2015 Congressional App Challenge as part of its $150 million Future Edge effort to help more Americans get the skills they need to succeed in the future. Recognizing that the future depends on the investments we make in today’s students, Capital One is proud to support the mission of engaging more students in coding and computer science.
